ParaZero introduces a “SafeAir” parachute for the DJI Phantom and Mavic Pro series

ParaZero introduces a parachute for the DJI Phantom and Mavic series

ParaZero just announced a new “SafeAir” parachute system designed for the DJI Mavic Pro and Phantom series. The company already made parachute systems for larger drone models such as the Matrice 600 series but will now be launching similar systems for the smaller DJI drones. One benefit of this latest model is that the parachute is re-packable by the end-user and thus can be re-used. This system does not only work when you encounter a total malfunction of the drone and it comes falling out of the sky but it also when it detects excessive roll angle, in which case it will shut down the propellers before deploying itself.

Official announcement of the DJI Phantom 4 Pro V2.0?

It was only yesterday that we showed you a screenshot of what seems to be the new DJI Phantom 4 Pro V2.0. Today we are excited to share with you what seems to be a first official image of new drone.  It appears that the official launch date of this new product is May 8th, which of course at the time of me writing this, in China it already is. It is very hard to tell, but based on the lo-res photo it seems that this new drone may, in fact, have the silent propellers we first saw on the DJI Mavic Pro Platinum Edition. We later saw these new props also surface in an FCC filing.

DJI Phantom photos show interchangeable lens system with 50mm f/2.8 lens

DJI Phantom photos shows interchangeable lens system with 50mm f2.8 lens 0002f

Earlier this evening two new photos were posted on Twitter that show two silver-colored DJI Phantom drones with interchangeable lenses. They seem to be the same two Phantoms we have seen before. One photo shows a 50mm f/2.8 DJI lens detached from the lens mount. We are still unsure at this point what kind of DJI Phantom this might be. But it is hard not to get excited about a new quadcopter with an interchangeable lens system that might not break the bank like the Inspire 2 and Zenmuse X7 lens combo does.

DJI receives FCC approval for the Phantom 4 RTK (Real-Time Kinematic) commercial drone

DJI receives FCC approval for the Phantom 4 RTK (Real-Time Kinematic) commercial drone

Last Friday, DJI received FCC approval for what seems to be a Phantom 4 controller. Today, the Chinese drone manufacturer receives another FCC approval for the Phantom 4 RTK (FCC ID SS3-WM334R1801). RTK stands for Real-Time Kinematic and enables the drone to map out an area, building or stockpile with a very high level of accuracy (up to 5cm or 2 inches). DJI requested a 45-day secrecy cycle, meaning that this commercial drone may come to the US market soon as part of their big push into the commercial drone market.

DJI receives FCC certificate for what seems to be a Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 controller

FCC filing of the Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 controller

Last Friday, DJI received FCC approval for what seems to be a newer or different version of the controller of the DJI Phantom 4 Pro V2.0. Back in March, we reported on the DJI Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 as well as the controller (version number GL300L1801). The one for which DJI got FCC approval last Friday carries number FCC ID SS3-GL300K1801 and it is unclear at this point whether this is a newer version or a different version of the controller.

Will DJI introduce a Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 ‘Platinum Edition’ before moving to the Phantom 5?

DJI Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 Platinum Edition

About one week ago new images surfaced on Twitter showing what could be a DJI Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 model. Last Friday, we were notified of two new FCC filings (controllerdrone) from DJI, indicating that the photos are likely legit.

DJI may be about to release a new version of the DJI Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 or “Platinum Edition” during the NAB 2018 event in Las Vegas in April. The introduction of a new Phantom 4 could also mean that we will not see a new DJI Phantom 5 until October or November of this year.

This time Casey did not fly his drone in Manhattan. Instead, he and Peter McKinnon flew to Bermuda for some change of scenery.

More details emerge of DJI Phantom 4 RTK

Five days ago, we first reported on the newly announced DJI Phantom 4 RTK (Real-Time Kinematic). This new DJI model with very precise and accurate mapping technology, showed up during an official event of the Chinese drone manufacturer where two other new drones for the agricultural market were introduced. Details of the Phantom 4 RTK where very limited initially. We had reached out to DJI to find out more but at the time they could only confirm that this was indeed a new DJI drone model. We do not have any information yet on price and availability.

Since then new photos and more information about the Phantom 4 RTK have emerged.

Latest 4K drone footage showing Apple Park starting to live up to its name

Drones are a great tool for letting us see things that would be impossible from the ground – like the inside of the new Apple Park spaceship ring campus.

Matthew Roberts‘ latest 4K drone footage of Apple Park shows the campus starting to live up to its name, with a great many trees and grass areas now in place. It looks very much closer to the ‘building amid nature’ image seen in the early renders …

FAA rules ignorance resulted in drone-helicopter collision over Staten Island

Back in September, we reported on the DJI Phantom 4 Pro drone that had collided with a U.S. Army Sikorsky UH-60M Black Hawk helicopter flown by Fort Bragg soldiers over Staten Island. Luckily nobody was injured and the helicopter only sustained minor damage. The accident did become the first official drone-aircraft collision in the U.S. aviation history. The military started an investigation into the incident immediately and was able to identify the drone pilot based on the serial number found on parts of the drone that were logged in the helicopter.

Now the National Transportation Safety Board has released a full report on the drone incident.

A review of the Inspire 2 and Zenmuse X7 from DJI

A review of the Inspire 2 and Zenmuse X7 from DJI

Emmy winner, Graham Sheldon, got his hands on a DJI Inspire 2, a set of Zenmuse X7  gimbal and lenses. Here is what he thinks about the combination that offers you a 24 MP CMOS sensor and 14 stops of dynamic range.

In his review, he notes how much easier the Inspire 2 is to operate and how much faster you are up and running. He notes:

“The big sell for me on this is that it takes five minutes from box open to takeoff. Unbuckle the drone and lens case and in minutes grabbing shots with your favorite two or single person team.”

Drone melted but amazing photos of hot lava were worth it

In pursuit of amazing photos of 2,000-degree hot lava, Erez Marom flew his $1,500 DJI Phantom drone too close and caused it to melt. The melted drone was worth it though according to Marom. He said:

“When you take a drone through a volcano, you take a certain risk that the drone isn’t going to come back,” Marom says. “I knew the drone might not come back, but it was worth it.”

Drone patrol at beaches in Perth, Australia

Drones to the rescue at beaches in Perth, Australia

As we go into the winter here in New York, summer is just getting started in Perth, Australia. 7 News Perth reports that this year the lifeguards will have a new member on their team, a drone. In Surf Life Saving colors these drones will help the lifeguards patrol the beach, looking for swimmers in need and to spot any sharks nearby. Both swimmers and sharks are very hard to spot from the beach, but from a drone’s point of view, they are clearly visible in the ocean water.
