First Dates with New Drones: A rookie flies the DJI Minis

As an early drone adopter, my heart broke often. My first drone was a toy helicopter that took one fuzzy shot of me from about 40 feet up before I lost control and it hit the ground never to fly again. Then a series of mostly “toy” quadcopters, one of which was monstered by my niece’s dog. But last month, DJI loaned us a Mavic Mini (now discounted) and then the just-released Mini 2. I flew both for the first time within days of one another.

Tiffen DJI Mavic Mini ND & polarizer filter kit review

Tiffen Mavic Mini filter

When ND filters were first released for the DJI Mavic Mini, they didn’t have much use as the DJI Fly app didn’t let you change the shutter speed when capturing video, meaning the drone would automatically change the settings. After an update that fixed this, we got our hands on the Tiffen ND & polarizer filter kit for the Mavic Mini.

DJI Mavic Air 2 new

Not too long ago, we got our hands on images of what looks like to be DJI’s replacement for the DJI Mavic Air, the new DJI Mavic. The new Mavic looks like it will closely follow the design of its bigger brother, the Mavic 2 series, with almost identical positioning of certain features. While a few are different, it’s likely they will closely resemble the unreleased DJI Mavic 3.

DJI Fly app new version 1.0.8 Mavic Mini

Right before the weekend, DJI released a new version of its new DJI Fly app that is currently only used for the DJI Mavic Mini (from DJI or Amazon). The new version 1.0.8 focuses on improving the stability of the app, fixes some bugs and optimizes warning prompts for when the DJI Mavic Mini is flown in strong winds. No new features haves been introduced with this recent update. Expand
