New Mavic 2 firmware update released by DJI - v01.00.04.00

Today, DJI released a new Mavic 2 firmware update. The previous update was released late January and introduced waypoints to the Mavic 2 among other things. This update introduces a Dual Remote Controller mode, a feature that will be appreciated mostly by professional users, such as filmmakers, police, firemen and search and rescue operations. DJI also fixed some smaller issues that had to do with making sure that the correct GPS information is displayed when viewing photos on a computer. And, fixed abnormal gimbal movement after completing a QuickShot Rocket.

How to downgrade your drone's firmware with DJI Go 4 app

How to downgrade your drone’s firmware with DJI Go 4 app

DJI just released a video on how to downgrade your drone’s firmware with the DJI Go 4 app. In the video, they show the procedure for a DJI Mavic 2 Pro, but I assume this works for any recent DJI drone. You basically press and hold the menu icon (three horizontal lines in the top right corner) for five seconds and a special firmware menu appears. You can now select which previous firmware version you would like to downgrade to. Check it out.

DJI Smart Controller sells out in first 24 hours after becoming available in US

DJI Smart Controller Sells Out

The DJI Smart Controller is sold out. Yes, almost exactly 24 hours ago, I wrote that the DJI Smart Controller was available to US customers and now it is out of stock again on the DJI online store. It seems that the new controller with the 5.5″ built-in display has sold out within the first 24 hours of hitting the market in the US. Clearly, many drone pilots appreciate the brighter, built-in display, better range and other features that the DJI Smart Controller offers.

Not happy with Mavic 2 and DJI Goggles Racing Edition Combo

When you buy the Mavic 2 from DJI’s online store, you have the option to include the DJI Goggles Racing Edition Combo for an additional $449. In the top right corner, there’s a blue link that says “What’s the difference?” Well, the difference seems to be that customers who opt for the DJI Goggles RE Combo are a lot less satisfied with their purchase then the ones who didn’t include the goggles to their purchase.

DJI Smart Controller is now available for purchase

DJI Smart Controller is now available for purchase

Last Friday, I wrote about the DJI Smart Controller and when it might be shipping to customers in the US. Sometime that same day, the FCC re-activated the equipment authorization system and the filing for the DJI Smart Controller appeared. Since then the product listing on DJI’s online store has been updated as well and the product is now available for purchase.

When will the DJI Smart Controller ship to US customers?

When will the DJI Smart Controller ship to US customers?

DJI Smart Controller looks great, especially in a case like this with a DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise, but when will this new device ship to customers in the US? DJI introduced the well-received, but slightly expensive, DJI Smart Controller during CES 2019. However, ever since the introduction this new device has been listed as out of stock on the US version of the DJI online store. One of our readers in Germany was able to buy the new controller online and received it yesterday. The photos in this article were taken in Asia (Taiwan) where the Smart Controller apparently has been shipping as well. The US customers though seem to have been left in the cold. What is going on here? When will DJI be able to ship their new Smart Controller to their US customers?

Update 1/21/19: it is in stock now!

Newly introduced but out of stock DJI Smart Controller gets firmware update

Newly introduced but out of stock DJI Smart Controller gets firmware update

The newly introduced but out of stock DJI Smart Controller gets its first firmware update. Earlier this week, during CES 2019, DJI released the new DJI Smart Controller for the DJI Mavic 2 Pro, Zoom, and Enterprise drones. Interestingly enough the controller is still listed as out of stock on DJI’s website. And as of yet, we have not even seen this new product filed with the FCC, although the partial government shutdown might have something to do with that. On top of that, there are persistent rumors that the Chinese drone maker is working around the clock to assemble all the necessary components for this new controller. Leaving us wondering when we may be able to actually buy this exciting new device. However, none of this stopped DJI from releasing the first firmware upgrade for the DJI Smart Controller.

The price goes down to $400 when bought in combination with the DJI Mavic 2 Zoom or Pro drone.

54 Mavic 2 Filters from Polar Pro, Tiffen, and the rest. Which filters are best?

mavic 2 filters with pro and zoom drones

I recently received a total of 54 filters for the Mavic 2 Pro ($1,499) and Mavic 2 Zoom ($1,249) from 5 different manufacturers. (I had offers to test even more, but I had to turn them away.)  I then set off to test these filters over the next several weeks and compare them on a total of 16 different metrics. I wanted to know who makes the best Mavic 2 filters. It is Polar Pro, Tiffen, or one of the several smaller Chinese accessory suppliers? The winners might surprise you.

Mavic 2 improvements – DJI upgrades make it a better drone

dji mavic 2

The Mavic 2 Zoom and Mavic 2 Pro were game-changing drones upon their release. In typical DJI fashion, the Mavic 2 was released a bit hastily, with some issues yet to be worked out with firmware updates. DroneDJ and others have filed some complaints and it looks like DJI has been listening. These two drones are better drones today then they were upon their release.

Mavic 2 Pro vs. Phantom 4 Pro – read this before buying

DJI Mavic 2 and Phantom 4 Pro best real estate photography drone

At first glance, the Mavic 2 Pro (1,499) seems like the obvious successor to the Phantom 4 (also $1,499). The Mavic 2 has equivalent specifications in almost all areas, but it folds into a fraction of the size of the Phantom 4 Pro. The Mavic 2 Pro also sports 10-bit color on a Hasselblad-branded camera and several new automated flight modes among other improvements. With these upgrades it seems like the Phantom 4 is finished, right? Despite the apparent advantages of the Mavic 2 Pro, the Phantom 4 Pro still has some key features that give it an edge for some pilots. In this comparison, I dive into the specs, discuss the hidden pros and cons of each drone, and tell you which is best for specific applications.

DJI’s video of the Greenland expedition and the new remote controller

DJI's video of the Greenland expedition and the new remote controller

DJI posted a video on YouTube that shows more footage of the trip to Greenland with the DJI video team, Jimmy Chin and Kit DesLauriers. We had already seen some of this footage during the launch of the DJI Mavic 2 Zoom and Pro drones. The mysterious new remote controller that we have seen before, show up in this video as well (2:21). Initially, I thought this might have been the controller for the DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise but since that launch happened last week and no new controller was shown, I am starting to wonder, will this be the controller for the highly anticipated DJI Phantom 5? Hmmm, now there’s a thought…
