US researchers use drones to collect critical gases from La Palma volcano

An interdisciplinary research team from the University of New Mexico (UNM) has become one of the first in the world to sample uncontaminated gases from an active volcanic eruption. The data – a treasure trove that can help to predict when a volcano will erupt – were collected during the recent spewing of the Cumbre Vieja volcano at La Palma in Spain’s Canary Islands.

Spain’s La Palma island is expanding. As the red-hot lava from the volcano that erupted on the island on September 19 reached the Atlantic Ocean this week, it triggered plumes of white steam. The molten rock cooled rapidly on coming into contact with the water, binding itself to the cliffside, enlarging the island’s territory. A drone captured the historic moment.

New USGS drone video shows dramatic drop at Kilauea Summit in Hawaii

Yesterday the U.S. Geological Services (USGS) took a drone to the top of Kilauea Summit to show a dramatic drop and cracks running through the ground at the south side of the crater. Steve Brantley, a scientist from the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory talks about the 300ft subsidence of the Halema‘uma‘u crater floor in the drone video below.

Hawaii volcano eruption: drone video shows Mount Kilauea spewing lava

A drone video shows Mount Kilauea erupting and spewing fountains of lava into the sky in a residential area. The volcano eruption in Hawaii has caused a large-scale evacuation in the Leilani estates residential area, home to about 1,500 people. The footage from the unmanned aerial vehicle shows the lava oozing through the local forest. Yesterday afternoon the FAA issued a Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) for the area to prevent drones from interfering with first aid responders.

On Thursday, October 19 a surveillance drone flew over the Agung volcano in Bali, Indonesia and detected that the fracture that was photographed by a satellite on
Wednesday had in fact widened. While the seismic activity under Agung is still at an increased level, it has come down since then and continues to decline.
