Researchers from the Agile Robotics and Perception Lab (ARPL) at New York University (NYU) have developed a way for drones to control swinging loads. The system essentially works by estimating the payload location and adjusting accordingly to stop the swinging motion.

Airspace Link has been delivering COVID-19 test kits from hospitals to a lab to speed up testing turnaround times since mid-January. The company has been working with DroneUp and the University of New York (SUNY) to make it happen.

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced Geopipe as the winner of the GENIUS NY program with a grand prize of $1 million to create 3D models using drones. BotsAndUs, Droneseed, Eget Liber, and Skyy Network all received $500,000.

The Herkimer police department in New York State has acquired two new drones to assist search and rescue operations, emergency deliveries, and other departments within town. The police department was able to secure $4,200 in funding from the village board to purchase the DJI drones.
Looters stole around $16,000 worth of drones from DJI‘s Manhattan store last Saturday. Six drones were taken and have not yet been recovered. The incident took place at around 11:25 p.m.

Last week, the first part of New York’s 50-mile drone corridor received approval from the Federal Aviation Authority for beyond-visual-line-of-sight (BVLOS) drone test flights.
In its second year, NUAIR is hosting the 2019 New York UAS Symposium at Turning Stone Resort in Verona, NY. During the three-day event, you will be able to watch drone demonstrations using the 50-Mile BVLOS corridor outfitted with the radar and technologies needed to make the entire corridor testable airspace. The 2019 New York UAS Symposium will take place from September 16 to 18, 2019.

For the first time, counter-drone technology and NYPD drones will guard the NYE ball drop at Times Square in New York. Police officials have said that there is no known threat to the New Year’s Eve festivities in the city. The counter-drone technology and New York police drones will be present as a precaution and as part of the safety measures.
Last week, Tech:NYC together with DJI, organized their third edition of Policy Labs ‘Drones 101’ at DJI’s offices in New York. The event brings together industry leaders and policymakers to discuss the implications of emerging technology. This time the focus was on drones and the outdated NYC law that restrict drone use in both the city of New York and the state.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art partnered with Hasselblad and DJI for a special inspection project this fall. The condition of the limestone blocks that make up the 12th-century Fuentidueña Apse at The Met Cloisters had to be inspected. The Met Cloisters is a branch of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and is located at the very Northern tip of Manhattan just off the Hudson River.
On Wednesday, a United Airlines crew spotted a drone flying ‘near’ the Statue of Liberty. It disappeared before the NYPD could ground the ‘illegal’ unmanned aircraft system (UAS). Reportedly the drone flew about 3,000 to 4,000 feet away from the landmark sometime between 6 pm and 6:30 pm on Wednesday.

To celebrate the 4th of July, Casey Neistat just released this video on YouTube of him drone surfing on New York City’s East River. A lot of the footage in the short film is really quite stunning as the city provides an awesome backdrop for all his stunts, not just in this video. Regardless of what you think of his FAA rules-breaking drone flying, you have to admit that Casey has a nick for attention-grabbing videos. Yesterday, during the launch event of the new Parrot Anafi, we had the chance to talk with the Global Marketing Manager, Vincent Vantilcke about the company’s latest product. We asked him about some of the benefits the Anafi offers and who the company is targetting with their latest drone.
Two weeks the U.S. Department of Transportation announced the 10 successful UAS Integration Pilot Program applications. To everybody’s surprise, Amazon and the State of New York, which according to Governor Cuomo is building “the most advanced drone testing in the country,” were not among the lucky few. News that Assemblyman Anthony Brindisi (D-Utica) said was “boggling.”
Switzerland-based drone manufacturer, Fotokite took home the Grand Prize of $1 million in the Genius NY drone competition. Fotokite has developed a tethered unmanned aerial device that can stay in the air indefinitely. Not too long ago, CNN actually obtained FAA approval to fly this drone over people.
This year’s GENIUS NY Finals Night will be Monday, April 9, at the Marriot Syracuse Downtown. It will be an exciting night starting with drone startup pitches and ending with each team receiving a large cash prize to support its continued growth; prizes total nearly $3 million.
In one of his most recent videos, Casey Neistat reviews the 4K Snap drone. This is the same drone that the FAA allows CNN to fly over crowds with. Neistat had pre-ordered the drone two years ago when he was still flying a DJI Phantom 3 drone. The new Snap drone seemed much smaller and lighter at the time. Now, two years later, drone technology has moved on and we have drones like the DJI Spark, a drone that is much, much smaller than a Phantom and even smaller than a Snap drone.
In their December issue, the New York Magazine has published a number of amazing drone photos of iconic buildings and locations in New York City. The aerial photos, taken by Humza Deas, are all captured with the #straightdown perspective that we have come to appreciate so much.
The drone photos show the Statue of Liberty, The Chrysler Building, Grand Central Terminal, the Unisphere, Stuyvesant Town, Columbus Circle, Port Authority Bus Terminal and more all taken by flying the drone straight overhead. The result is amazing and shows the city in ways few of us have ever seen.
The Northeast UAS Airspace Integration Research Alliance (NUAIR), a coalition of private and public entities and academic institutions in New York and Massachusetts. is creating the most advanced airspace corridor in the country, right here in the state of New York. The 50-mile corridor will be used for drone safety and performance testing as well as the development of drone traffic management systems so that one day the FAA may allow drones to fly beyond line-of-sight.
