Drone footage of Walt Disney’s Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge construction site

During yesterday’s shareholder meeting, Walt Disney’s chairman and CEO Bob Iger showed this drone video to provide a visual impression of the massive expansion that is underway at both Disneyland and Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The drone video is from Disneyland’s version, which will open ahead of the Walt Disney World version, of the Star Wars themed amusement park. Both parks are expected to open in 2019.

Drone footage shows massive expansion

The drone footage shows different parts of the Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. Many of the structures and buildings on the 14-acre land section come into focus. The Galaxy’s Edge will feature two signature rides and will offer dining and shopping as well. An immersive experience will leave visitors under the impression of actually being on the fictional planet Batuu itself.

“We wanted to build new Star Wars stories, new Star Wars destinations, but this time you could be in that story that required us to go to a new place,” Trowbridge said at Star Wars Celebration in 2017. “It’s a new planet. It’s a new place. It’s this remote frontier outpost.”

Lucasfilm creative executive Pablo Hildalgo added, “With every new Star Wars story it’s like coming back home but finding a new corner of that home you’ve never explored before. When it came to developing this location…not only figuring out where this place is on the galactic map but what its history has been throughout galactic history.

“It’s been there for thousands and thousands of years,” Hidalgo explained, “You’re going to discover that. You’re going to be able to get a sense of the history of the place when you go there.”

The two signature rides will special experiences. One will allow visitors to pilot the iconic spacecraft the Millenium Falcon, while the other ride will put people in the middle of a battle between The First Order and the Resistance.

The exact opening dates in 2019 for each park has yet to be determined. No surprise really when you take in to account that this is the biggest expansion of any theme park Disney has ever undertaken.
