Most British drone owners are over 55 and male

It may come as a surprise for such a new technology but apparently, in The United Kingdom, it is not the youngsters who are the biggest group of drone fliers. No, the biggest group of drone enthusiasts in the UK is “Males of 55 years and older”.

According to a Drone Usage Report, research done by online drone retailer Drones Direct, the single largest age group of drone owners, is the group older than 55. This group represents 31% of all the drone owners, whereas the “Youngsters” group (18-24 years old) only represents 10%.

Drone appreciation comes with age

  • 18-24 years old: 10%
  • 25-34 years old: 12%
  • 25-44 years old: 19%
  • 45-54 years old: 28%
  • Over 55 years old: 31%

The trend is pretty obvious, drone ownership levels increase with age. Why would this be? Well, drones are somewhat pricey and older people may have more disposable income for an expensive hobby and more time to actually enjoy it.

The report also indicated that a large group uses the drone for photography (60%) and videography (63%) and are outdoorsy types (45%). This may indicate that a lot of outdoor lifestyle, landscape and nature photo – and videographers may have purchased a drone to accompany them on their trips.

Where are the female drone pilots?

The report also shows that 96% of all drone owners are men. What happened to the women? Why are they so under-represented? That’s a question that needs to be answered. Do women have no interest in flying drones altogether? Or is there something missing in the current drone offerings, and that’s why woman show no interest? Curious to hear your thoughts on this in the comments below.

Please do keep in mind that the report does not give any information about sample size, which makes it hard to judge the numbers. However, it is interesting to see that it is not only the young people who are into drones.
